Sahih AlBukhari 4986

حدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بنُ إسْماعِيلَ، عَنْ إبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ: حدَّثَنا ابنُ شِهابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بنِ السَّبّاقِ:أنَّ زَيْدَ بنَ ثابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ

Musa bin Ismael told us, from Ibrahim bin Sa'd: Ibn Shihab told us, from Ubaid bin Al-Sabaq that Zaid bin Thabit (رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ) said,

أرْسَلَ إليَّ أبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيق مَقْتَلَ أهْلِ اليَمامةِ فإذَا عُمَرُ بنُ الخَطّابِ عِنْدَهُ قالَ أبو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ:

Abu Bakr Al-Saddiq sent to me about the killing of the people of Al-Yamama. And when Umar bin Al-Khattab was with him, Abu Bakr (رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ) said,

إنَّ عُمَرَ أتانِي فَقالَ: إنَّ القَتْلَ قَدِ اسْتَحَرَّ يَوْمَ اليَمامَةِ بقُرَّاءِ القُرآنِ، وإنّي أخْشَى إِنِ اسْتَحَرَّ القَتْلُ بالقُرَّاءِ بالمَوَاطِنِ فيَذْهَبَ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ القُرآنِ. وإنّي أرَى أنْ تأمُرَ بجَمْع القُرآنِ.

“Umar came to me and said that there were numerous casualties on the day of Al-Yamama amongst the reciters of the Qur'an, and I am terrified of numerous casualties of the reciters in other localities. Then much of the Qur'an will be gone. And I think that you should order the collection of the Qur'an.”

قُلْتُ لعُمَرَ: كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُ شَيْئاً لمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم؟

I said to Umar, “How can you do a thing which the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not do?”

قالَ عُمَرُ: هذَا وَاللهِ خَيرٌ،

Umar Said: “This, by Allah, is good.”

فَلَمْ يَزَلْ عُمَرُ يُرَاجِعُنِي حتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي لِذلكَ، وَرَأيْتُ في ذلكَ الّذي رَأى عُمَرُ.

And Umar did not stop coming back to me until Allah opened my chest for that. And I saw in that what Umar saw.

قالَ زَيْدٌ: قالَ أبُو بَكْرٍ: إنّكَ رَجُلٌ شابٌّ عاقِلٌ لا نَتَهِمُكَ وَقَدْ كُنْتَ تَكْتُبُ الوَحْيَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَتَتَبَعِ القُرآنَ فاجمَعْهُ.

Zaid said that Abu Bakr said: “You are a young man, wise, and we have no blame upon you. And you used to write the inspired things for the messenger of Allah, (صلى الله عليه وسلم). And you go after the Qur'an and bring it together.”

فَوَاللهِ لَوْ كَلَفُوني نَقْلَ جَبَلٍ مِن الجِبالِ ما كانَ أثْقَلَ عَليَّ ممّا أمَرَنِي بِهِ مِنْ جمْعِ القُرآنِ.

And by Allah! If they had commissioned me to move one of the mountains, that would not be a weightier thing for me than what he ordered me for the collection of the Qur'an.

قُلْتُ: كَيْفَ تَفْعَلُونَ شَيْئاً لمْ يَفْعَلْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم؟

I said, “How can you do a thing which the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not do?”

قالَ: هُوَ وَاللهِ خَيرٌ.

He said, “It, by Allah, is good!”

فَلَمْ يَزَلْ أبُو بَكْرٍ يُرَاجِعُنِي حتَّى شَرَحَ اللهُ صَدْرِي للّذِي شَرَحَ لَهُ صَدْرَ أبي بَكْرٍ وعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما،

And Abu Bakr did not stop coming to me until Allah opened my chest to that for which he had opened the chest of Abu Bakr and Umar (رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما).

فَتَتَبّعْتُ القُرآنَ أجمَعُهُ مِنَ العُسُبِ واللِّخافِ وَصُدُورِ الرِّجالِ حتَّى وَجَدْتُ آخِرَ سُورةِ التّوْبَةِ مَعَ أبي خُزَيمَةَ الأنْصَارِيِّ لمْ أجِدْها مَعَ أحَدٍ غَيره

Then I searched for the Qur'an to collect it from the stalks of palm-tree branches and thin, wide, white stones and the chests of men until I found the last of Surat-Al-Tauba with Abi Khuzaima Al-Ansari. I did not find it with anyone except him.

{لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ (التوبة ١٢٨-١٢٩) حتَّى خاتمَة بَرَاءَةَ.}

“A messenger from yourselves has come to you. Grievous to him is that which has overburdened you” (Surat Al-Tawba 128-129) Until the end of Surat Bara'a.

فَكانَت الصُّحُفُ عِنْدَ أبي بَكْرٍ حتَّى تَوَفّاهُ اللهُ، ثُمَّ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ حَياتَهُ، ثُمَّ عِنْدَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ.

Then, the writings were with Abu Bakr until Allah took him, then with Umar for the length of his life, then with Hafsa, the daughter of Umar (رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ).

صحيح البخاري ٤٩٨٧

Sahih Al-Bukhari 4987

حدَّثَنَا مُوسَى: حدَّثَنا إبْرَاهِيمُ: حدَّثَنا ابنُ شِهابٍ: أنَّ أنَسَ بنَ مالكٍ حَدَّثَهُ:

Musa told us that Ibrahim told us that Ibn Shihaab told us that Anas bin Malik told him:

أنَّ حُذَيْفَةَ بنَ اليَمانِ قَدِمَ عَلى عُثْمانَ، وكانَ يُغازي أهْلَ الشّامِ في فَتْحِ إِرْمِينِيَةَ وأذْرَبِيجان مَعَ أهْلِ العِرَاقِ. فأَفْزَعَ حُذَيْفَةَ اخْتِلافُهُمْ في القِرَاءَةِ، فَقالَ حُذَيْفَةُ لعُثْمانَ: يا أمِيرَ المُؤْمِنينَ، أدْرِكْ هذِهِ الأُمّةَ قَبْلَ أنْ يَخْتَلِفُوا في الكِتاب اخْتِلافَ اليَهُودِ والنَّصَارَى.

Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman came to Uthman, and the people of Sham were fighting to conquer Armenia and Azerbaijan with the people of Iraq. And Hudhaifa was alarmed at their difference in the recitation of the Qur'an. And Hudhaifa said to Uthman, “Emir of the believers, take hold of this nation before they differ about the book as the Jews and the Nazarenes differed.”

فأرْسَلَ عُثْمانُ إلى حَفْصَةَ أنْ أرْسِلي إلَيْنا بالصُّحُفِ نَنْسَخُها في المَصَاحِفِ ثُمَّ نَرُدُّها إلَيْكِ.

And Uthman sent to Hafsa, “Send us the writings so we can make copies of them into books, then we will return them to you.”

فأرْسَلَتْ بِها حَفْصَةُ إلى عُثْمانَ، فأمَرَ زَيْدَ بنَ ثابِتٍ، وَعَبْدَ اللهِ بنَ الزُّبَيرِ، وَسَعِيدَ بنَ العاصِ، وَعَبْدَ الرَّحْمنِ بنَ الحارِثِ بنِ هِشامٍ فَنَسَخُوها في المَصَاحِفِ.

And Hafsa sent them to Uthman. And he then ordered Zaid bin Thabit and Abdullah bin Al-Zubair and Said bin Al-As and Abdurahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham, and they made copies of them into books.

وقالَ عُثْمانُ للرَّهْطِ القُرَشِيِّينَ الثَلاثَةِ:

And Uthman said to three of the Quraishi tribe,

إذَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ أنْتُمْ وَزَيْدُ ابنُ ثابِتٍ في شَيْءٍ مِنَ القُرآنِ فاكْتُبُوهُ بلِسانِ قُرَيْشٍ فإنَّمَا نَزَلَ بلِسانِهِمْ،

“If you differ with Zaid bin Thabit in any thing in the Qur'an, then write it in the tongue of the Quraish, as it came down in their tongue”

فَفَعَلُوا حتَّى إذَا نَسَخُوا الصُّحُفَ في المَصَاحِفِ رَدَّ عُثْمانُ الصُّحُفَ إلى حَفْصَةَ فَأرسَلَ إلى كُلِّ أُفُقٍ بِمُصْحَفٍ مِمّا نَسَخُوا.

And they worked until when they had copied the writings into books, Uthman returned the writings to Hafsa and sent to every region a book from what they had copied.

وأمَرَ بِمَا سِوَاهُ مِنَ القُرآنِ في كُلِّ صَحِيفَةٍ أوْ مُصْحَفٍ أنْ يُحْرَقَ.

And he commanded that whatever was from the Qur'an, in every writing or book, be burned.

صحيح البخاري ٤٩٨٨

Sahih Al-Bukhari 4988

قالَ ابنُ شِهابٍ: وأخْبرَنِي خارِجَةُ بنُ زَيْدِ بنِ ثابِتٍ سَمِعَ زَيْدَ بنَ ثابِتٍ قالَ:

Ibn Shihab said: And Kharija bin Zaid bin Thabit told me he heard that Zaid bin Thabit said:

فَقَدْتُ آيَةً مِنَ الأحْزَابِ حِينَ نَسَخْنا المُصْحَفَ قَدْ كُنْتُ أسمَعُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْرأُ بها

I missed an Aya from Surat Al-Ahzab when we copied the book and I used to listen to the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) recite it.

فالتْمَسْناها فَوَجَدْناها مَعَ خُزَيمَةَ بنِ ثابِتٍ الأنْصَاريِّ

Then we searched for it and we found it with Khuzaima bin Thabit Al-Ansari:

{مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُواْ مَا عَاهَدُواْ اللَّهَ عَلَيْهِ}

“From the believers, there are men who are true to what they have covenanted with Allah.” (33:23)

فألحَقْناها في سورَتِها في الصُّحفِ.

Then we attached it to its sura in the writings.

صحيح البخاري ٥٠٣٨

Sahih Al-Bukhari 5038

حدَّثَنَا أحْمَدُ بنُ أبي رَجاءٍ: حدَّثَنا أبُو أُسامَةَ، عَنْ هِشامِ بنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أبِيهِ، عَنْ عائِشَةَ قالَتْ:

Ahmad bin Abu Raja told us that Abu Usama told us from Hisham bin Urua from his father, from Aisha, that she said:

سَمِعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَجُلاً يَقْرأُ في سُورَةٍ باللّيْلِ فَقالَ:

Allah's messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) heard a man reciting a sura at night and said,

«يَرْحَمُهُ اللهُ لَقَدْ أذْكَرَنِي آيةَ كَذَا وكَذَا كُنْتُ أُنْسِيتُها مِنْ سُورَةِ كَذَا وكَذَا».

“May Allah have mercy on him because he reminded me of such and such a verse which I was made to forget from such and such a sura.”

صحيح البخاري ٦٨٢٩

Sahih Al-Bukhari 6829

حدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ: حدَّثَنا سُفْيانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ،

عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما قالَ:

Ali bin Abdullah told us that Sufian told us from Al-Zuhri from Ubaid Allah from Ibn Abbas (رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما) that he said:

قالَ عُمَرُ: لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أنْ يَطُولَ بِالنَّاسِ زَمانٌ حَتَّى يَقولَ قائِلٌ:

Umar Said: I have feared that when a long time has passed the people will talk, saying:

لا نَجِدُ الرَّجْمَ في كِتابِ اللهِ،

“We do not find 'stoning' in the book of Allah”.

فَيَضِلُّوا بِتَرْكِ فَريضَةٍ أنْزَلَها اللهُ، ألا وإِنَّ الرَّجْمَ حَقٌّ عَلى مَنْ زَنى وَقَدْ أَحْصَنَ إذَا قامَتِ البَيِّنَةُ، أو كانَ الحَمْلُ أوِ الاعْتِرَافُ.

Then they will go astray by abandoning something obligatory which Allah had sent down. Is not stoning deserved for the one who commits adultery and had married, if proof is produced, or if there is a pregnancy, or a confession.

قالَ سُفْيانُ: كَذا حَفِظْتُ،

Sufian Said, “I have memorized it like this:”

ألا وَقَدْ رَجَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَرَجَمْنا بَعْدَهُ.

Did not the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) practise stoning and we practised stoning after him.

صحيح البخاري ٦٤٣٧

Sahih Al-Bukhari 6437

حدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ قَالَ: أخْبرَنا مَخْلَدٌ: أخْبرَنا ابْنُ جُرَيْج قالَ:سَمِعْتُ عَطاءً يَقولُ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ:

Muhammad told us that he said that Makhlad told us that Ibn Juraij told us that he said: I heard Ata saying, 'I heard Ibn Abbas saying':

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقولُ:

I heard the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) saying:

«لَوْ أنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ مِثْلَ وادٍ مالاً لأحَبَّ أنَّ لَهُ إلَيْهِ مِثْلَهُ ولا يَمْلأُ عَينَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إلا التُّرابُ، ويَتوبُ اللهُ عَلى مَنْ تابَ».

“If there were to the Son of Adam the likeness of a valley of riches, he would like that there be to him another one like it. Nothing fills the eye of the Son of Adam except dust, and Allah forgives the one who repents.”

قالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: فَلا أدْري مِنَ القُرْآنِ هُوَ أمْ لا.

Ibn Abbas said: And I do not know if this is from the Qur'an or not.

قالَ: وسَمِعْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيرِ يَقولُ ذلكَ عَلى المِنْبرِ.

Ata said: And I heard Ibn Al-Zubair saying this from the pulpit.

صحيح البخاري ٦٤٤٠

Sahih Al-Bukhari 6440

وقالَ لنا أبو الوَليدِ: حدَّثَنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ ثابِتٍ، عَنْ أنَسٍ، عَنْ أُبيَ قالَ:

And Abu Al-Walid said to us: Hamad bin Salma told us from Thabit from Anas from Ubay that he said:

كُنَّا نُرَى هذَا مِنَ القُرْآنِ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ {أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَّاثُرُ} (التكاثر: 1)

We used to think that this was from the Qur'an, until “The accumulation of things diverts you” (Surat Al-Tukathir: 1) came down.

صحيح مسلم ٢٢٨٦

Sahih Muslim 2286

حَدَّثَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ عَنْ أَبِي حَرْبِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

Suwaid bin Saeed told us, Ali bin Mushir told us from Dawud from Abi Harb bin Abi Al-Aswad from his father, that he said:

بَعَثَ أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ إِلَى قُرَّاءِ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ ثَلَاثُ مِائَةِ رَجُلٍ قَدْ قَرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَقَالَ

Abu Musa Al-Ashari sent for the reciters of the people of Basra. Three hundred men came to him. They recited the Qur'an, then he said:

أَنْتُمْ خِيَارُ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ وَقُرَّاؤُهُمْ فَاتْلُوهُ وَلَا يَطُولَنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ الْأَمَدُ فَتَقْسُوَ قُلُوبُكُمْ كَمَا قَسَتْ قُلُوبُ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ

“You are the best of the people of Basra and you are their reciters. And recite it, and do not allow a long time to go by and harden your hearts, as it hardened the hearts of those who were before you.”

وَإِنَّا كُنَّا نَقْرَأُ سُورَةً كُنَّا نُشَبِّهُهَا فِي الطُّولِ وَالشِّدَّةِ بِبَرَاءَةَ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا غَيْرَ أَنِّي قَدْ حَفِظْتُ مِنْهَا

And we used to recite a sura. We likened it in length and strength to surat Bara'a. And I was made to forget it, except that I have remembered from it:

لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى وَادِيًا ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ

“If there was for the son of Adam two valleys of wealth, he would desire a third valley, and nothing would fill the inside of the son of Adam except the dust.”

وَكُنَّا نَقْرَأُ سُورَةً كُنَّا نُشَبِّهُهَا بِإِحْدَى الْمُسَبِّحَاتِ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا غَيْرَ أَنِّي حَفِظْتُ مِنْهَا

And we used to recite a sura. We likened it with one of the Musabbihat suras. And I was made to forget it except that I have remembered from it:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ

“O you who believed and you did not say what you do not practice.”

فَتُكْتَبُ شَهَادَةً فِي أَعْنَاقِكُمْ فَتُسْأَلُونَ عَنْهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

And it is written as a witness on your necks, and you will be asked about it on the day of resurrection.

صحيح مسلم ٣٤٢١

Sahih Muslim 3421

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَنْ عَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ

Yahya bin Yahya told us that he said: I recited to Malik from Abdullah bin Abu Bakr from Amra from Aisha that she said:

كَانَ فِيمَا أُنْزِلَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ عَشْرُ رَضَعَاتٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ يُحَرِّمْنَ ثُمَّ نُسِخْنَ بِخَمْسٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ فَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

There was in what was sent down from the Qur'an, ten known sucklings make it forbidden to marry. Then it was abrogated by five known sucklings Then the messenger of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) died.

وَهُنَّ فِيمَا يُقْرَأُ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ

And they were in what is recited in the Qur'an
